The Danish National Centre for Social Research has been commissioned to investigate the implications involved when soldiers are deployed on international missions. More and more soldiers are being deployed abroad for international military assignments. Since 1992, approx. 25,000 soldiers have been sent on 40,000 deployments to international military missions.
One of the aims of the project “Danish soldiers after a war-zone deployment” is to evaluate how the mental and physical health of the soldiers is affected. This means investigating any diseases soldiers contract, what are causes of death, and how many commit suicide. There will also be focus on the soldiers’ education and job situation after they return to Denmark. How many of the soldiers take an education? Is there a higher rate of unemployment among former soldiers or are they particularly good at making a career for themselves? How many soldiers start a family and how many get divorced?
The project comprises several sub-projects and will be carried out from 2010 to 2011. The results will be published on this website, which will be regularly updated and expanded.
