The aim of this research programme is to explore and test educational support interventions for children in foster care, attending normal elementary school and for children in residential care, attending either normal elementary schools or internal schools at the residential settings. In the study of children in foster care, we evaluate two different educational support interventions developed for children in foster care: 1) a school-based intervention inspired by the Swedish SkolFam programme, and 2) a home-based tutoring intervention inspired by The Canadian Kids in Care Programme. This study will be conducted as a randomized controlled trial (RCT). In the study of children in residential care, we aim at offering the same school based intervention, inspired by SkolFam. However, children in foster care and residential care have very different living conditions and school life circumstances. To properly adjust the intervention and the study design to the institutional setting, this study, therefore, necessitates preparatory qualitative research to obtain knowledge about the schooling conditions for children in residential care and the organization of internal schooling.
