This article sheds light on the economic and social viability of the Nordic welfare model in the light of the most debated challenges: globalization, Europeanization, changing labour markets, new family types, population changes, social problems and the popularity of the welfare state. Universalism and encompassing social services is the most distinct features of the Nordic welfare model in comparison with the Anglo-Saxon and Continental European models, whereas welfare expenditures are roughly the same. Three conclusions are drawn. First, that the greatest challenges concern changes in the labour market, aging populations, and new and old social problems. Second, for this reason that social policy should be a matter of investing in human resources with a view to integrate the recipients of welfare into the labour market and society at large. And, finally, that the Nordic model compares well to the other welfare models in meeting these challenges.
